This stream was once renowned for its rich, flowing course through those woods that held the secrets of marshes and waterfalls. But as it reached Lind's ravine, it transformed into a small, still, and docile stream. Even the stream cannot pass by Mrs. Rachel Lind's house without taking its decorum and decorum into account. Perhaps, as it flowed there, it sensed that Mrs. Rachel was always sitting by her window, her sharp eye fixed on everything that passed before her, from streams and children to anything beyond them, and that if she noticed something strange or out of place, she would find no rest until she had investigated the reasons and causes behind it.

There is no doubt that there are plenty of people in and around Avonlea who, by neglecting their own affairs, can closely observe the affairs of their neighbors. But Mrs. Rachel Lind was one of those capable creatures who could manage her own affairs and those of the rest of the community at the same time. She was a skilled housewife, always able to get her work done, and to do it well. She oversaw the sewing circle and was considered the strongest pillar of a charity. Yet, Mrs. Rachel often found time to sit for hours by her kitchen window knitting cotton quilt covers; she had knitted sixteen, as the Avonlea housewives whispered with alarm, while at the same time keeping a watchful eye on the main road that cut through the valley up to the red hill beyond the valley.

Since Avonlea was situated on a small, triangular peninsula overlooking the Gulf of St. Lawrence and surrounded by water on two sides, anyone leaving or arriving in it had to take the path of that plateau, followed by the discerning eyes of Mrs. Rachel, who missed nothing.

One early June afternoon, Mrs. Rachel sat by her window. The sun streamed through, warm and bright, and the gorse garden beyond the house shone with the blossoming of its rosy-white buds, over which swarms of bees buzzed. Meanwhile, Thomas Lind, the unassuming man whom the people of Avonlea called Rachel Lind's husband, was sowing the last of the turnips in the hill field beyond the threshing floor, and Matthew Cuthbert was supposed to be sowing his in the field of the Great Red Stream, far up in the green hills.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0602/3734/8926/files/D8_A3_D9_86-_D9_81_D9_8A-_D8_A7_D9_84_D9_85_D8_B1_D8_AA_D9_81_D8_B9_D8_A7_D8_AA-_D8_A7_D9_84_D8_AE_D8_B6_D8_B1_D8_A7_D8_A1-600x880-1_c382de08-80f7-4781-8188-1f9446699238.jpg?v=1740772335
https://mokabook.net/en/products/%d8%a3%d9%86-%d9%81%d9%8a-%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%85%d8%b1%d8%aa%d9%81%d8%b9%d8%a7%d8%aa-%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%ae%d8%b6%d8%b1%d8%a7%d8%a1-%d9%84%d9%88%d8%b3%d9%8a-%d9%85%d9%88%d8%af%d9%85%d9%88%d9%86%d8%aa%d8%ba
