Your actions during those first few months in any new position will largely determine whether you succeed or fail.

Failure in any new role can end a promising career. But a successful transition to a new position involves more than just avoiding failure. When leaders go off course, their problems are often attributed to cycles of damage that began in their first few months in office. Besides those leaders who fail completely, there are those who survive this cycle but remain unaware of their full potential. As a result, these leaders miss out on many opportunities that could advance their careers and help their organizations thrive.

Why are these transitions such critical periods? When I surveyed 1,300 senior HR leaders, nearly 90% agreed that "the transition to a new role is the most challenging period in a leader's career,"1 and almost three-quarters agreed that "success or failure during the first few months is a strong indicator of a leader's future success or failure in the role." So, failing during the transition period doesn't necessarily mean complete failure, but it does diminish your chances.

Probabilities of success.

The good thing about these transitions is that they give you a chance to start fresh and implement necessary changes within the organization. However, they are also very fragile periods; you lack strong working relationships and a deep understanding of your new role. You're also under intense scrutiny, constantly being examined by others who are trying to understand your personality and leadership style so they can quickly form an opinion about your effectiveness. Once that happens, it's difficult to change those opinions. If you succeed in building credibility and achieving early successes, that momentum will propel you throughout your time in the position. But if you put yourself in a difficult position from the start, you'll face a tough battle until the very end.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0602/3734/8926/files/1630580886_i924086_ee574c02-caa7-4f9c-aa0e-98f11a223a0a.jpg?v=1740755198
