About the book

"On one level, this novel may be seen as an escape from reality, but on another level, it is an example of the liberation of the spirit… This delightful novel will charm everyone." – The Daily Telegraph

"This novel is a dreamy, sensual depiction of the glories of the Italian spring." – Mail on Sunday

identification

This deceptive, clever, and comedic novel has remained a bestseller since its publication, and has been adapted for the stage, radio, and film many times.

It tells the story of four very different women who escape the gloom of post-World War I London for a spring break at a charming Italian castle on the Italian Riviera. Soothed by the Mediterranean atmosphere, they gradually change and discover the harmony each of them longed for but never knew. Elisabeth von Arnim's novel convincingly answers the age-old question of how to find happiness in life.

A novel about friendship between women, empowerment, renewed love, and unexpected passion.

About the author

Elizabeth von Arnim (1866-1941), one of the most important English writers, whose real name was Mary Annette Beauchamp, was a cousin of the writer Katherine Mansfield. She was born in Australia to a wealthy family, married a German aristocrat, a descendant of King Frederick William I of Prussia, and settled with her husband on his family's estate in Pomerania, where they raised five children and employed E. M. Forster and Hugh Walpole as tutors for the boys.

After her husband's death, she had a three-year romantic relationship with the writer H.G. Wells. She then married Frank Russell, the older brother of Nobel Prize-winning philosopher Bertrand Russell, also for three years before they divorced. When World War II broke out, she moved permanently to the United States, where she remained until her death. Her first marriage made her Countess von Arnim-Schlagenten, and her second Elizabeth Russell, Countess Russell.

She published her first novels under a pseudonym, but with the great success of her books, she used the name "Elisabeth von Arnim." She published more than twenty books, and her novel "April the Enchanted," published in 1922, is a bestseller in both England and the United States, and one of her most beloved and famous works.
