And so, under German occupation, Aleichin became a hostage and the property of Europe's new masters, the Nazi Germans, who seized the opportunity to exploit his fame as world chess champion. Aleichin collaborated with Hans Frank and Joseph Goebbels (ministers of the Nazi regime) and participated in tournaments held in the Reich. Thus, he was transformed from a chess player into a pawn to be manipulated. Little by little, he began to lose his most important pieces: his wife, Grace, his friends, and his best rivals. After the war, Aleichin fled to Portugal, living alone as if playing against everyone. There, the once-invincible champion played his last game.
It is a story about chess, but more importantly, about how to be yourself.
