Anthropology from a pragmatic point of view
Product details
Reading this book, which Kant published in the autumn of his life in 1798, is a philosophical exercise of a special kind; in it the philosopher combines the considerations and principles of rational analysis, and adheres to the divisions he previously adhered to in his lessons in experimental psychology regarding the basic functions and powers of the soul in terms of its external manifestations. In it, he also investigates, by way of observation and experiment, specific data related to the conditions of expression and behavior, from facial features to the natures of peoples and nations, and from local customs to the major characteristics of human natures.
This is not limited to the testimonies of philosophers - few, to be fair - but includes invoking classical literature and its great figures from the ancients: Horace, Lucretius, and the moderns: Milton, Molière, Voltaire, Swift, Richardson.
This combination is based on a balance between the general prior knowledge required by thought and the empirical content that needs a system and arrangement to be included in a particular art, regardless of its sources.
