This novel unfolds within the family of a noble Japanese family, where a young woman lives with her ailing mother, a noblewoman herself, after her father's long-standing death. The young woman suffers from the feeling that her mother doesn't give her the same love she bestows upon her estranged brother, and thus her persistent desire to escape from her mother is renewed. However, her mother's illness and struggle on her deathbed delay this escape, but do not prevent it. This coincides with the return of the son to the family home, burdened by debt due to his constant drinking. He then commits suicide after his mother's death, leaving his will to his sister, who has already arranged to run away in search of a man who will bring her happiness.
