Then I continued plowing the path, barefoot. I had no provisions other than my staff and my short, tattered robe, worn like a rag. The midday sun had begun to beat down on my face and neck. Every now and then I looked back, making sure no one was following me. Across the hills and ravines, I saw tents and tent encampments. Flocks, dogs, and shepherds. The earth seemed to recede beneath my bare, dusty feet. I thought I was lost in this vast, strange land. I feared that this path I was taking would lead me nowhere. But I had no choice but to keep going. Even stopping to catch my breath was a waste of time and a source of anxiety.
