Witches of Bendl

Product details

Fleetwood Shuttleworth, a young wife and mistress of Gotthorpe Manor, stumbles upon a letter from the doctor to her husband, informing him that her pregnancy will put her and her unborn child at risk of death. As she ponders this dire news, she encounters a strange woman in the woods surrounding her manor, carrying a sack of dead rabbits. The woman claims she did not kill them, but they were killed, and then disappears.
Fleetwood forgets all about it, spending her days in the nausea and vomiting she had grown accustomed to after her previous failed pregnancies. Her husband abandons her, and she returns alone to her bed and her nightmares. Then one day, she rides her horse through the woods of her estate, but it bolts, causing her to fall. She finds herself once again before Alice Grey, the eccentric woman, who heals her wounds and takes her back to her estate. On the way, she discovers that Alice is a midwife and offers her a job. Alice reluctantly agrees. With Alice's remedies, Fleetwood's health improves, her appetite returns, and her complexion brightens. But things don't always go as planned. Fleetwood discovers two things: that Alice is wanted for witchcraft, and that her husband has taken a mistress who is pregnant with his child.
Fleetwood decides to take Alice away to her mother's house for a while. After some time, her husband comes to retrieve her. Upon returning with Alice, she finds herself trapped. Law enforcement officers are waiting for them and arrest Alice for the murder of a young girl through witchcraft. Undeterred, Fleetwood goes to meet Alice in her dark prison cell and learns that the child was her lover's daughter, whom she had been caring for after her mother's death. However, the child suffered from a strange illness and died from it.
Fleetwood desperately seeks to clear Alice's name. She pleads with the judges, searches for her father and her employer, but nothing seems to offer any hope. Finally, she resorts to a last resort: she goes to Alice's lover and forces him to write a statement exonerating Alice and clearing her of the terrible accusation. She takes the statement and gallops off on her horse, but labor pains strike her unexpectedly, and she is carried, between life and death, back to her mansion. Her husband arrives, and she begs him to go to court and read the man's statement aloud. He rushes there, and Alice is acquitted. She returns to Fleetwood's husband, gives birth to Fleetwood's first child, and stays with them until they reach safety.
