Les Misérables

Product details

Les Misérables depicts the lives of several French characters throughout the 19th century, including the Napoleonic Wars, focusing on the ex-convict Jean Valjean and his struggles after his release from prison. The novel explores the nature of good and evil and the law in a captivating story that showcases Parisian landmarks, morality, philosophy, law, justice, religion, and the nature of romance and familial love. Victor Hugo was inspired by the criminal/policeman François Vidocq, but he split that character into two in his story. Les Misérables has been adapted for the stage and screen through the play of the same name, and a film adaptation, also titled Les Misérables (2012), was a huge success, achieving a rating of 7.6/10 and winning several awards. The novel depicts the miserable social conditions of the French after the fall of Napoleon in 1815 and the failed revolution against King Louis Philippe in 1832. The author portrays the suffering of the French people through the character of Jean Valjean, who endured the bitterness of imprisonment and continued to suffer after his release.
