The Little Hero - and Other Stories

Product details

Dostoevsky wrote the story "The Little Hero" while in solitary confinement in the Petropavlovskaya fortress, and much later he told his friend: "When you found me in prison, you thought that this was the end, but I soon became completely calm and quiet."
So what did I do? I wrote the story "The Little Hero." Read this story! Do you find anything in it of anger, resentment, or pain? While I was in prison, I had peaceful, kind, sweet, and pleasant dreams, and the longer I stayed in prison, the better I felt.
This contrast between the damp cell and the long wait for the verdict, and the peaceful dreams and bright, luminous memories, is a rare psychological phenomenon.
Dostoevsky explained this phenomenon by saying: “There is an amazing vitality in human nature! I truly could not have believed that man possessed such vitality, but now I know it from experience.”
"My childhood is over," how wonderful Dostoevsky's description of these emotions that burn in the heart of a passionate boy! The last lines of this story, which Dostoevsky wrote before he was transferred to the Siberian prison camp, are among the purest romantic dreams his pen ever penned.
It is a farewell to the youth before the pains that will reveal to him the power of evil in the depths of the human soul.
This romantic spirit unites most of the stories included in this collection.
