The Other Thing by Ghassan Kanafani... The novel "The Other Thing" was first published in the weekly magazine "Al-Hawadith," published in Beirut, in nine consecutive installments beginning on Friday, June 25, 1966, under the title "Who Killed Layla al-Hayek?" Kanafani did not republish the novel as a standalone book, perhaps due to the changed political circumstances after the June 1967 war. "The Other Thing" is a narrative tapestry unlike anything we have seen in Kanafani's previous or subsequent works. He writes a detective story, or something akin to a detective story, and the plot unfolds in moments of tension as the characters try to discover the killer and the circumstances surrounding the crime that claimed Layla al-Hayek's life.
