This novel unfolds within the family of a noble Japanese household. A young woman lives with her ailing mother, a member of the nobility, after her father's long-standing death. The young woman suffers from the feeling that her mother doesn't shower her with the same love she gives her estranged brother, and this fuels her persistent desire to run away. Her mother's illness and struggle on her deathbed delay this escape, but don't prevent it. Meanwhile, the son returns to the family home, burdened by debt from his relentless drinking. He commits suicide after his mother's death, leaving his will to his sister, who has already arranged to elope and find a man who will bring her happiness.
