Quiet (The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking) by Susan Cain... I have been working on this book officially since 2005 and unofficially throughout my adult life. I have spoken and written to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people about the topics covered in this book, and I have read just as many books, academic papers, journal articles, chat room discussions, and blog posts. I have cited some of these in the book, and others have formed almost every sentence I have written. Quiet draws on the experience of many, especially scientists and researchers whose work has taught me a great deal. In an ideal world, I would have named every single one of my sources, mentors, and interviewees. However, for readability, some names appear only in footnotes or in acknowledgments. For similar reasons, I have not used ellipsis or brackets in some quotations, but I have made sure that the added or omitted words do not change the intended meaning of the speaker or writer. If you wish to quote these written sources from the original, the citations that direct you to the full quotations appear in footnotes. I have changed the names and identifying details of some of the people whose stories I recount, and in my own work stories. As a lawyer and consultant, I protected the privacy of participants in Charles de Cagnot's public speaking workshop who did not intend to be included in a book when they signed up for the class. My story, "My First Night in Class," is a composite of several sessions, as is Craig and Emily's, which draws on numerous interviews with similar couples. Taking into account memory lapses, all other stories have been retelling as they happened or as they were told to me. I did not verify the stories people told me about themselves; I only included those I believed to be true.
