He decided to leave after being mocked by his father more than once, and after his father had insulted his mother in front of the people of the village near the shrine of Sidi Ahmed al-Badawi. Before he left, his father embraced him—the first and last embrace—and slipped a few coins into his pocket. Before he took the final step across the threshold of his village, Sheikh Jumaa al-Awar announced the good news of his father's marriage to Sitt Wadad al-A

Masha. He walked with heavy, aching steps, entering the shrine of Sidi Ahmed al-Badawi. He vented his innermost feelings to the shrine's caretaker, who slipped more coins into his pocket than his father ever had. He then traveled to the city that shelters the innocent. Upon entering the station, after hearing the greeting "Thank God for your safe arrival," he felt severed. He walked with the waves of bodies that pushed him in every direction, searching for the exit. He remained suspended inside the station, trying to leave, remembering his journey, and trying to cope. Returning was bitter, leaving was painful, and he was caught between departure and return. In this state, he glimpsed Wadad al-Amsha, but in a different, more modern way. His journey continued, a journey to discover the world and himself. There was no difference between the village and the city. He remembered the events of his village, the events of the city, the state of the country, and the state of the world, connecting them. At that moment, he realized he was resisting oppression and seeking freedom through rebellion and escape. Then he unfurled his passport, signaling his certain departure.

It is a journey from village to city, opening up a new horizon, or attempting to do so. This journey disrupts the existing equilibrium through a new displacement, but it is a displacement from one's homeland—a breaking of its borders, or its annihilation through departure, since the current world offers nothing to hold onto. This is primarily a voluntary displacement, a way to escape a world that has lost its sense of self and awareness, heading towards a new abyss.
