The Tao Te Ching and Virtue

Product details

“I undertook the translation of this text during a period when my life was in turmoil: personal defeats, general defeats, and confusion in thought and behavior. This translation had its effect: I don’t say it resolved the situation, but it illuminated some aspects of it, and called me to moderation and simplicity in dealing with life.”
The author, Lu Tzu, is a close companion of Confucius, but while Confucianism is concerned with human behavior in daily life, Taoism addresses a more spiritual aspect of human life.
I approached the text with my soul and heart more than with my mind, and perhaps this is one of the fundamental contradictions in man that the book revealed.
The English translations of “Jia-Fu Feng” and “Jane English” from which I quoted are simple and beautiful. I deliberately made the old words in the text accessible to ordinary people. It is a lively and direct translation of a very old text.
