A Curse by Muhammad Radwan... Hair thickening, arms growing stronger, a thin line of green hairs above the upper lip, a rough voice, and other things. I didn't mean these signs when I told my father that I was experiencing changes I'd never known before. I know the signs of puberty well; I've heard about them from peers who went through them before me. But none of them told me that during puberty, they would wake up to find a pillow full of straw under their head. The days were all the same: the green color stretching to the horizon, the sounds of tractors and farmers' calls, the murmur of water flowing between crops in long, parallel, and sometimes tangled paths; the scattered, moving white forms of cattle egrets and their companions from the bird kingdom—dark-colored crows, pigeons, and doves—their paths intersected without conflict, as if they had made a pact of lasting peace. Each was busy with their own business, except in one place, the only place where they shouldn't have been in the first place.
