Death in Bed Number 12 by Ghassan Kanafani... It's customary for a writer's first work to receive a "passport" to the reader... a foreword by a famous writer at the beginning of the book... or a few sentences on the back cover, or a wide-ranging publicity campaign involving the writer, the publisher, and friends of both, recounting how the stories were created, how the wounded pen bled them, and so on... I believe that a book should speak for itself, and if it fails to achieve even a fraction of its author's ambition, the author should simply accept that, just as they have accepted—time and time again—to tear up stories to rewrite them... or write others... And so, I encourage "Death in Bed Number 12" to forge its own path, if it can find its way, on its own, without "intercession," without "mediation," and without a "passport." Ghassan Kanafani, 1961
