Dostoevsky spent nearly two years writing The Brothers Karamazov, which was serialized in the journal The Russian Messenger and completed in November 1880. He intended it to be the first part of an epic titled The Life of a Great Sinner, but he died less than four months after its publication, in late January 1881, just weeks after the final installment of the novel appeared in The Russian Messenger.
The Brothers Karamazov addressed many issues concerning humanity, such as family ties, raising children, the relationship between the state and the church, and above all, the responsibility of each person towards others.
