Jose de Souza SaramagoA Portuguese novelist, playwright, and journalist, he was born on November 16, 1922. His works, some of which can be considered allegorical, often present historical events from a different perspective, centered on the human element. Critics consider him one of the most important writers in Portugal. He received the PEN International Prize in 1982 and the Camões Prize in 1995.

The author steadfastly refused to allow the novel to be published until after his death. The publishers only contacted him 36 years after he had submitted it, informing him that they had found it after it had been lost for all that time and wished to publish it, but he refused. This was his second novel, following "A Guide to Drawing and Calligraphy" in 1947. International critics considered it to possess an inspiring freshness, penetrating our senses and eliciting expressions of our wonder and delight. What astonished them was how a young man in his thirties could write with such maturity and outline his literary concerns and the blueprint for his work.
And what is the source of his artistry and sensitivity, so clearly defined? Where did he acquire all this profound knowledge? In "The Skylight," we encounter all of Saramago's male characters: H from "The Drawing and Calligraphy Manual," Ricardo Reis from "The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis," Raimundo Siva from "The Story of the Siege of Lisbon," Cain, Jesus Christ, and Cipriano Algor. They are a group of taciturn, solitary, and free men, lacking only the discovery of love to break free from their intense and introverted way of life.
