The third part of Naguib Mahfouz's renowned trilogy, considered by many critics and literary specialists to be the best and most important Arabic novel. Set between the mid-1930s and early 1940s, this installment witnesses the greatest number of transformations in the life of Mr. Ahmed Abdel Gawad's family. The protagonists of the previous two parts fade into the background, either through death or voluntary withdrawal from life, while the grandchildren, now young adults with their own desires and inclinations, take center stage. Kamal shares the spotlight, observing these transformations and constantly reflecting on people and events. The novel was published in 1957 and adapted for the screen in 1973.
