The Motivation Hoax
Product details
This book is not an anti-motivational book. Some of the people I greatly admire are motivational writers and thinkers—people like Edward Dacey, William Kahn, and Carol Dweck, who developed theories of self-determination, personal engagement, and a growth mindset, respectively.
This book is not against quotes either. Some of the quotes are very insightful, and I always enjoy Christopher Columbus's famous words: ("You will never be able to cross the ocean if you do not have the courage to take your eyes off the shore"), William Ward's saying: ("To be grateful and not express it is like wrapping a gift and not giving it"), and W. C. Fields' immortal words: ("If you don't succeed on the first try, try again, then give up. There's no point in looking like a fool while you're trying to do it").
Simply put, this is a book that opposes motivational nonsense. I wrote it to counter the unwise nature of absolute quotes and sayings, which are either untrue or riddled with gaps.
It is important to note that the critical, and perhaps even sarcastic, approach I take in this book is not an attack on the people who uttered the words we are discussing. The individuals I write about are more successful and intelligent than I am. My argument is simply to refute the statements they once made—statements that have been adopted by motivated people in ways that generalize these statements, oversimplify things, or mislead people, even unintentionally.
